ORA-27038 Dump File Already Exists

Oracle Version: 11.2.0.3
Platform: Windows Server 2003, SP2

The Problem

When running a data pump export job you get the error listed below:

Connected to: Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0
With the Partitioning and Real Application Testing options
ORA-39001: invalid argument value
ORA-39000: bad dump file specification
ORA-31641: unable to create dump file "USER_EXP.dmp"
ORA-27038: created file already exists
OSD-04010: <create> option specified, file already exists

The Problem

You already have another export file with the same name, or it could probably be just any other file with the same name sitting in the directory on the file system where you want to write out the new dump file to.

The Solution

You have two options.

1) Delete the files manually
2) Use the REUSE_DUMPFILES parameter to overwrite the files, as below:

REUSE_DUMPFILES=Y

You can add this command to your .par file or specify it at the command line when you are running your data pump export. If you decide to go with option 1 and delete the files manually you can easily create a job which deletes all .DMP files from that directory before the export job is kicked off. I use this approach for an OEM job that we run every week so the previous week’s data pump files are still there which means that I have to delete them before running the export again.
