ORA-38880: Cannot advance compatibility from 10.2.0.4.0 to 11.2.0.2.0 due to guaranteed restore points

The Problem

I had created a guaranteed restore point in my 10g, 10.2.0.4, database with the idea that I would have a fail back plan should anything go wrong with the upgrade process to 11g.

After creating the restore point, running the necessary pre-upgrade checks and changes and then starting up the DB in upgrade mode, I ran across the error below:

SQL> STARTUP UPGRADE
ORACLE instance started.

Total System Global Area 789172224 bytes
Fixed Size 2257336 bytes
Variable Size 218107464 bytes
Database Buffers 562036736 bytes
Redo Buffers 6770688 bytes
ORA-38880: Cannot advance compatibility from 10.2.0.4.0 to 11.2.0.2.0 due to
guaranteed restore points

The Cause

You cannot advance the compatibility parameter from 10.2.0.4.0 to 11.2.0.2.0 when using a guaranteed restore point. This is slightly frustrating because without advancing this parameter some of the new features are not available to you.

The Solution

In my case I decided that I still wanted to use the restore point but I would not advance the compatible parameter to 11.2.0.2.0.
